PEA Joint Accommodations Letter to UVic
Dear PEA members,
The PEA has been working in solidarity with unions and student societies across campus to demand improved student accommodations at UVic. This collective effort has resulted in a letter to UVic leadership, delivered on April 9.
Students with disabilities have a legal right to an accessible and inclusive learning environment. Yet, while other leading universities have implemented effective systems to manage growing accommodation needs, UVic continues to lag behind. The consequences are serious—not just for students, but for our members who work every day to make the accommodations process function.
Today, one in five UVic students request academic accommodation. This increasing demand has placed enormous pressure on our members, who are committed to supporting student success but have not received the institutional support or investment necessary to do so. The result is unmanageable workloads, increased stress, and in some cases, poor outcomes for students who depend on these essential services.
This is why we’re taking action. Because advocating for a stronger accommodations system is not just about student rights—it’s also about ensuring our members can do their jobs without burning out.
If you have questions or want to get involved, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly.
In solidarity,
Stephen Portman
