PEA calls for concrete action for Indigenous reconciliation
The PEA has written to the provincial and federal ministers responsible for Indigenous Relations to urge that governments at all levels take concrete action towards completing the remaining Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
These letters follow on a resolution passed at the 2024 Convention that committed to increasing inclusion and psychological safety for Indigenous PEA members.
The letter to Rebecca Alty, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs of Canada, can be read here. The letter to Spencer Chandra Herbert, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, can be read here.
September 30, 2025 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, itself a response to Call to Action 80 from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action. This is a day to reflect and learn more about the history and ongoing legacy of residential schools. It is a chance to recognize and commemorate the intergenerational harm that residential schools have caused to Indigenous families and communities, and to honour those who have been affected by this injustice.
To date, only 14 of the calls to action have been completed, 21 are stalled, while 14 have not been started. Of those that have not been completed, a large number require action by the provincial and federal government.
The PEA continues to support meaningful reconciliation by providing education to our members on the history of the Residential School System, acting in solidarity with the survivors, fighting for culturally appropriate policies that reflect the unique needs of Indigenous workers, and advocating for Indigenous rights.
