PEA-UVic Chapter Update
Dear PEA members,
With everything on campus settling down after the return and with students back in their seats, your Union is sending along a few important updates:
1. Public Sector Bargaining and Job Action
The Government Licensed Professionals (GLP) chapter of the PEA and the BC General Employees Union (BCGEU) are currently engaged in escalating job action across the province. The outcome of this job action will determine the public sector mandate that the University and other public sector institutions bargain under. This means that the PEA and BCGEU members walking the picket line today are fighting not just for themselves but for union members like you as well. Their fight is your fight! If you are interested in learning the latest or in attending a picket site in solidarity click here.
2. Bargaining Update at UVic
The Bargaining Committee has been meeting to further survey review and proposal development. No bargaining dates have been confirmed yet as the public sector mandate remains outstanding due to the ongoing job action. We are currently working to schedule a Townhall to review bargaining priorities with the general membership in mid-October, in advance of the start of table negotiations anticipated to be in the late fall or early winter. There will be more information to come in the following weeks.
3. Accommodations Petition
PEA members have been unequivocal in the call for changes to accommodations policy at UVic. We know students are being left behind and our members are being left to pick up the pieces. In order to see real change we need to use our collective voice to get the Administration’s attention and a seat at the table in a working group to see that the appropriate changes are made. While the petition may not be perfect and more debate is needed on the solutions that are proposed, we urge those of you who have not already signed the petition to do so now. 4. Get Involved in Your Union
There has never been a better time to get more involved in your Union. The PEA is member driven and the involvement and leadership of our membership is what makes the difference. See below for two opportunities to get involved:
- Appointments Committee: Receives, reviews and recommends applicants for appointments to the various Union committees. Updates the appointments record to ensure vacancies are posted and filled appropriately. Supported by the Labour Relations officer, this appointment reports to the Chapter Executive. The anticipated monthly time commitment is one to two hours.
- Ombudsperson Executive Committee: Serves as the PEA Representative on the Ombudsperson Executive Board. Works alongside the Administration and Student Groups to help direct the organizational mandate of this important office. Supported by the Labour Relations Officer, this appointment reports to the Chapter Executive. The anticipated monthly time commitment is two to three hours.
If you are interested in either committee, please send a short letter of interest with brief note on the reason you would like to participate on the committee and on the skills or attributes that you can bring to the role to, sportman@pea.org.
If you have any questions about the upcoming round of bargaining or your rights and entitlements as a PEA Member at UVic, please do not hesitate to reach out, 250-385-8791, ext. 209.
In solidarity,
Stephen Portman
